Summer concerts at the Church of St Stephen in Toruń as part of the International Nova Music and Architecture Festival have become a cherished tradition. Though the church, built at the beginning of the 20th century, is relatively modern, it will resonate with the timeless elegance of Baroque music—entirely free of charge.
The oboe, with its tuneful, melancholic, and penetrating sound, was especially beloved during the Baroque period and continues to enchant musicians and listeners alike. And when it comes to Baroque, Johann Sebastian Bach reigns supreme. The concert will feature three of his masterful compositions. The Arioso from the Cantata BWV 156, with its atmospheric and delicate sound, will set a serene mood, allowing listeners to immerse themselves in the music.
The Adagio from the Concerto for Oboe, Strings, and Basso Continuo in G minor is equally subdued but offers a more melancholic and nostalgic soundscape. The Largo, arranged by Matt Naughtin, is a more joyful piece that still stimulates reflection and admiration for Bach’s genius.
Thomas Albinoni’s Concerto for Oboe, Strings, and Basso Continuo in D minor, op. 9 No. 2, allows the oboe to shine in its full glory. Cheerful and melancholic melodies alternate, showcasing the soloist’s skills. The tempo becomes more lively, with quiet initial parts accelerating to a dynamic conclusion.
 
Alessandro Marcello’s Concerto for Oboe, Strings, and Basso Continuo in D Minor, though in a minor key, features a faster tempo, making it a delightful listen. Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, arranged by Edward Huws Jones, will allow listeners to rediscover something new in this well-known and beloved work.
Attending the concert is not only about enjoying the unique repertoire of Baroque oboe hits but also about admiring the austere interior of the Protestant church. The stained glass windows, which inspired this year’s festival poster, are particularly captivating. Admission is free.
 
Marek Przywarty graduated from the organ class of Prof. Radosław Marzec and Prof. Piotr Grajter, as well as the harpsichord class of Prof. Urszula Bartkiewicz at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz. In 2021, he earned a doctorate in musical arts after defending his doctoral thesis. He has won numerous competitions, including a distinction at the 2nd National Organ Competition in Krasnobrod in 2009 and 3rd place at the 1st Intercollegiate Organ Competition in Katowice. Przywarty is also a harpsichordist and organist with the early music ensemble Ensemble Inégalité.
Mateusz Kubański graduated from the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz in the oboe class of Prof. Mieczysław Koczorowski. In 2013, he defended his doctoral thesis at the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań. Kubański performs with numerous ensembles and orchestras both in Poland and internationally, including in Germany, France, Ireland, Switzerland, Chile, Japan, and South Korea.
RAFFA Quartet is a string quartet consisting of Filip Lipski (violin), Justyna Cieślak (violin), Michał Rak (viola) and Cecylia Stanecka (cello). The artists are affiliated with the Toruń Symphony Orchestra, the Pomeranian Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Opera Nova Orchestra in Bydgoszcz. They formed the quartet to merge experiences from various musical backgrounds. While they primarily tour in Poland, they have also performed in Germany. In 2022, they released their first album, ON FOLK THEMES.
